Elephant on Rooftop Through Beaded Curtain Light
by Glen Ortiz
Bright midmorning sun fractures through strands of glass beads, scattering a grid of soft, circular light spots across a polished concrete floor. The beads hang in a dense vertical array, catching the cool season air with muted, grayish reflections that stretch toward the background. Through the gaps in the curtain, a massive, gray elephant stands motionless on a distant brick rooftop, its skin texture sharp against the sky. The animal's scale dwarfs the distant train terminal architecture, yet it remains perfectly calm. Dust motes float in the heavy shafts of light, illuminating the texture of the bead strands and the rough surface of the elephant's hide. One shadow from a bead falls precisely across the elephant's front leg, anchoring the impossible figure to the ground.
