Downward Falling Steam on Siberian Boot Rack in along an airbase flight line in Siberia

Downward Falling Steam on Siberian Boot Rack

by Eddie Nicholson

Cold silver dawn light washes a row of heavy black combat boots hanging on a metal rack along a frozen airbase flight line. Early winter frost coats the ground, and heavy overcast skies hang low. Instead of rising, thick white steam falls downward from the warm boots like heavy liquid, pooling on the tarmac in viscous streams. The metal rack reflects the dim light, and shadows stretch long across the frozen surface. Each boot shows deep creases and scuff marks, standing rigid against the surreal flow of vapor that rests on the leather before dripping away. The scene holds a rigid, institutional gravity.
