Downward Falling Smoke on Afghan Parade Ground

by Grace Hurley

Cool utility light cuts through steady rain on an early spring parade ground in Afghanistan, illuminating a heavy metal maintenance parts cage. The steel mesh glints with water droplets while deep shadows swallow the background. Rim light traces the cage edges in silver against the gloom. Instead of rising, thick gray smoke from a distant fire falls downward like a heavy, viscous liquid, pooling around the cage base and clinging to the wet concrete. The rain streaks vertically through the air, against the unnatural downward flow of the smoke. Dust and debris settle on the metal floor, at the base of the impossible event in a landscape of operational readiness. One raindrop slides down the cage wire, merging with the pooled smoke.
