Cool blue twilight washes the wet cinderblock wall behind a row of heavy cold-weather parkas hanging from a metal rack. Rain beads on the dark nylon fabric of the jackets, which drape in stiff, uniform folds against the gray sky. The ground reflects the overhead floodlights, turning the parade ground into a glossy surface of puddles and wet gravel. Each parka displays a distinct hood and zipper line, arranged with rigid symmetry. Water droplets rest on the lower hems, catching the faint glow of the artificial light. The metal poles of the rack stand straight and cold, anchoring the garments to the earth while the rain continues to fall in a steady, brief shower.
