Doorway And Wet Courtyard in Nairobi
by Axel Burgess
A narrow, damp passageway in Nairobi’s Westlands district is defined by peeling stucco walls that reveal layers of faded ochre and white plaster. A rusted metal doorframe stands slightly ajar, framing a glimpse of a cluttered interior where a ceramic flowerpot rests on a low concrete ledge. Outside, the overcast midday light diffuses evenly, softening the harsh edges of the cracked masonry and the wet sheen of the paved ground. A plastic basin sits near the threshold, filled with soapy water reflecting the grey sky, while a single banana leaf lies discarded against the wall, its green vibrant against the muted tones of the urban decay. A quiet, lived-in moment of domestic routine amidst the dense architecture.
