Alley Entrance in Madrid

by Charlene Rubio

A narrow Madrid alleyway dissolves into thick, pale gray mist at dawn, softening the sharp geometry of traditional stucco walls and wrought-iron balconies. Near a weathered wooden doorframe, a cluster of ceramic pots sits on a low stone step, their glazes dulled by the damp air. One blue enamel bowl rests among them, holding rainwater that reflects the muted sky. Beside the entrance, a metal boot scraper is caked with dried red clay, evidence of recent foot traffic. The wet pavement glistens under the diffused light, mirroring the faded green shutters of a nearby shop. A discarded postcard lies face down on the wet concrete, its edges curled by moisture.
