Judge's Bench in Kisangani Courtroom Twilight
by Derek Benson
Cool blue hour light falls through high windows into a town hall meeting room in Kisangani, illuminating a raised judge's bench with smooth, pale wood surfaces. The early evening wet season air hangs heavy outside, visible through rain-streaked glass that softens the distant background. Clean, uncluttered surfaces dominate the foreground, where a single wooden gavel rests beside a stack of leather-bound files. Layers of depth recede toward the back of the room, where rows of empty wooden chairs sit in shadow. The fluorescent overhead lights cast a faint, cool glow that competes with the deepening twilight, highlighting the dust motes dancing above the polished floor. A small national flag hangs slightly askew on the far wall, its colors muted by the low light. at the edge is a single crack in the concrete base of the bench, filled with gray dust.
