Cotton Bales Stacked High in Peruvian Mill at Dawn in along a food-processing floor with sorting tables in Peru

Cotton Bales Stacked High in Peruvian Mill at Dawn

by Mitchell Beck

Rows of white cotton bales rise in uniform columns, stacking nearly to the corrugated metal ceiling of the processing facility. The cool, pre-sunrise light falls through high windows, casting soft blue shadows across the concrete floor and metallic sorting tables. Dust motes hang suspended in the still air, illuminated by the first pale rays breaking through heavy overcast skies. The bales show rough, fibrous textures against the smooth, gray industrial surfaces. Wooden pallets support the heavy loads, their dark grain visible beneath the white fiber. Long shadows stretch across the room, guided by the alignment of the tables and the vertical lines of the stacked cotton, showing the mechanical order of the space. One bale rests slightly askew on the nearest pallet.
