Loom Row in Dry Dust Light at Vientiane Rail Yard
by Gene Arias
Bright noon light floods the open-air industrial space where rows of heavy textile looms stand in rigid alignment. Thick clouds of fine, pale lint hang suspended in the air, catching sharp beams of sunlight that cut through the haze. The metal frames of the machines gleam under the flat, unyielding glare, while layers of dust coat every surface in a uniform beige film. Rust streaks run down the sides of the equipment, marking years of exposure to the dry season heat. The ground is packed earth and concrete, scattered with loose fibers and small debris. Leading lines formed by the loom rows and overhead rails draw the eye deep into the yard, where the dust thickens into a glowing, opaque wall that obscures the distant background. One shadow falls across a gear mechanism, stark and geometric against the bright floor.
