Copper Light Reflecting Palms on British Columbia Canal in in British Columbia

Copper Light Reflecting Palms on British Columbia Canal

by Arlene Bird

Orange low-angle light washes over the calm water of an irrigation canal, turning the surface into a mirror for towering palm fronds. The sky above hangs heavy with low clouds, their gray undersides against the warm copper tones of the setting sun. The canal banks are lined with dry, golden grasses typical of midsummer in British Columbia. Dark green palm leaves stand sharp against the bright sky, their reflections perfectly duplicated below the waterline. A faint ripple near the edge breaks the symmetry, revealing the dark, wet earth beneath the shallow flow. The stillness feels shaped by the heavy air and the cooling day.
