Gold Light on City Hall Stairs After Crowd Leaves in at a crosswalk by a school gate in Beersheba

Gold Light on City Hall Stairs After Crowd Leaves

by Athena Gordon

Wet stone steps rise steeply toward the entrance of a municipal building, their surfaces slick with recent rain and reflecting pools of warm yellow light from distant street lamps. The air hangs heavy and humid, condensing on the cold concrete railing that runs along the left side. In the background, a school gate stands closed, its metal bars silhouetted against the dark street beyond. A crosswalk stretches across the foreground, its white stripes glistening under the spill of artificial illumination. The geometry of the stairs creates strong leading lines that pull the gaze upward toward the shadowed archway. Puddles form in the low spots of the pavement, distorting the overhead glow into fragmented circles of gold and amber. A lone metal bench sits empty near the base, its surface dark and damp.
