Commuters Climbing Wet Stairs from Seiyun Underpass

by Laura Gill

Hard coastal glare strikes the grey pavement where silver rain drizzle coats every surface. Three commuters ascend the concrete stairs rising from the dark underpass mouth into the bright midmorning sky. Their clothing clings slightly, heavy with the damp air of the season's turn. The wet stone steps reflect the harsh overhead light, creating sharp white highlights against the deep shadows of the tunnel entrance. A metal handrail runs along the side, slick with moisture. At the top of the third step, a plastic bag catches a glint of the sun, its crinkled surface shimmering against the dull grey of the city walls. The scene ends with a droplet hanging from the edge of a concrete ledge, poised to fall.
