Cobbler’s Workbench in Casablanca

by Freda Sims

First light after rain washes over the white-washed facade of a traditional Casablanca riad, the wet stone reflecting the soft, diffused sky. A narrow alleyway leads toward a semi-open doorway where a local artisan, draped in a white djellaba, is bent over a low wooden workbench. On the bench, amidst scattered leather scraps, lies a single brass awl and a spool of thick thread, tools of a cobbler’s trade. The damp air hangs heavy, catching the faint shimmer of soap bubbles thinning in a ceramic basin set near the entrance, their iridescent skins popping against the rough texture of the adjacent mosaic tile fragments.
