Cloudberry Fruit on Scottish Tundra Moss in in the Scottish Isles

Cloudberry Fruit on Scottish Tundra Moss

by Joel Sweeney

Pale, diffused light flattens the Scottish Isles tundra under a vast, cloudless sky. Low cloudberry plants spread across a bed of thick, wind-sculpted moss, their stems holding clusters of translucent amber fruit. The berries catch the soft midday sun, appearing as small, glowing jewels against the muted greens and browns of the dry season vegetation. The ground texture shifts from velvety moss to coarse, weathered heather. One berry hangs slightly lower than the rest, its smooth surface reflecting the gray-white sky above. Beside it, a patch of dry grass lies pressed flat against the soil.
