Clay Bowls in Fez

by Bethany Collier

Early morning light spills across the narrow, ochre-washed alley of Fez, illuminating a small ceramicist’s stall where the air still holds the cool dampness of dawn. A stack of glazed majolica bowls, their crazed surfaces crackling with intricate spiderweb patterns, sits near the edge of a low wooden counter, catching the first sharp rays of sun. Beside them, a few unglazed clay saucers rest on a rough linen cloth, their earthy tones against the bright blue and turquoise glazes. A solitary spice jar, its label faded by years of sun and dust, stands guard near the entrance, hinting at the bustling souk just waking up.
