Washing Ceramics in Fez

by Rose Craig

Pale blue dawn light falls through the heavy mist in a narrow Fez alley, illuminating a stone sink where a local merchant scrubs large ceramic basins. The rough, cracked painted stucco of the surrounding walls shows the wear of centuries, against the smooth, wet surfaces of the pottery. A faded hand towel, striped in indigo and white, hangs from a rusted nail above the basin, dripping onto the damp cobblestones below. In the background, the silhouette of a traditional wooden door frame is barely visible through the fog, while the merchant’s hands move rhythmically, rinsing the matte glaze of a cup under a thin stream of water.
