Sunlight Through Souk Roof on Copper Lanterns in in a covered bazaar aisle in Ville Nouvelle, Fez

Sunlight Through Souk Roof on Copper Lanterns

by Yolanda Burton

Soft, diffused light falls through gaps in the wooden slat roof of a covered bazaar aisle in Fez. The illumination highlights rows of hammered copper lanterns hanging in clusters from iron hooks. Their surfaces show a warm, reddish-brown patina that contrasts with the cool, damp gray of the stone floor below. Water droplets rest on the edges of fabric awnings stretched overhead, catching the late afternoon glow. Beside the hanging lights, woven mats in deep indigo and ochre drape against rough plaster walls. The narrow passage feels enclosed, with the metalwork reflecting the muted sky above. One copper rim on the nearest lantern catches a faint gleam of the overcast sky.
