Ceramic Jars in Marrakech

by Brody Le

Winter noon light strikes the textured ochre wall of a souk entrance, illuminating a chaotic yet organized stack of woven palm baskets piled precariously beside a faded blue wooden door. A weathered doormat, frayed at the edges, lies damp from morning dew, anchoring the entryway where a terracotta stoneware crock sits slightly askew on a low stone ledge. Nearby, a cluster of glass jars with metal lids reflects the harsh sunlight, their contents obscured by dust and time. The immediate threshold of commerce, where raw materials and finished goods overlap in a tight, lived-in space, defined by the rough weave of the baskets against the smooth, crazed glaze of the ceramic vessels.
