Silver rain streaks across the dark, wide expanse of the Yarra River as a flat-deck chain ferry moves steadily against the current. The predawn sky holds a faint, cold glow that reflects off the wet steel hull and the heavy iron chains anchoring the vessel to the riverbed. Raindrops create ripples on the water's surface, breaking the dark reflection of the distant, bare willow trees on the bank. The ferry's simple metal railing stands stark against the misty air, while the concrete embankment in the foreground glistens with moisture from the brief spring shower. One wet puddle on the dock shows the grey light and the shadow of the approaching boat.
