Sorting Laundry in Auckland
by Pamela Cox
Mist rests on the corrugated iron roof of a weathered Auckland weatherboard house, softening the sharp lines of the gable against a pale, grey dawn sky. On the narrow front porch, a woman in a thick wool coat leans over a plastic peg basket, her hands busy sorting damp laundry that drips onto the painted timber floorboards. Beside her, a glass carafe of water sits half-empty on a small folding table, its surface reflecting the diffuse, cool light. The air is still and heavy with moisture, blurring the background of native flax plants into indistinct green shapes. A quiet, domestic rhythm, anchored by the texture of wet fabric and the solid, reliable presence of the weathered home.
