Backstroke Swimmer Tumble Turn at Sunrise

by Marie Poole

First rays of pale gold light spill across the wet concrete edge of an outdoor pool, illuminating a swimmer mid-tumble turn. The athlete's body forms a tight arc against the dark water, arms tucked, legs driving upward with visible tension in the quadriceps. Wind ripples the surface of the pool, scattering the morning light into shimmering, broken patterns. Behind the lane, open fields stretch toward the horizon, their green grass damp and heavy with the wet season, swaying in the same breeze that whips the swimmer's hair. The concrete deck is slick with spray, reflecting the pale sky above. One droplet hangs from the swimmer's shoulder, catching the dawn light before falling back into the lane.
