Pole Vaulter Inverting at Dawn in Cuenca

by Julie Bridges

Turf spray and kicked-up grit hang suspended in the cool morning air as a pole vaulter inverts over the bar. The athlete is locked in deep shadow, their form defined only by a sharp rim light tracing the curve of the bent pole and the tension in their limbs. The pole bows deeply under the load, its fiberglass surface reflecting the faint, rising sun. Wet earth coats the ground beneath, glistening with recent rain typical of the wet season. Every muscle strains against gravity in a tight close-up that isolates the moment of peak effort. Dust motes swirl in the narrow beam of light hitting the landing area. at the edge is the blurred edge of the bar, trembling slightly under the weight of the inverted body.
