Backstroke Swimmer Tumble Turn Noon Kabwe Lane

by Kathy Harmon

Midday sun flattens the light across a narrow village lane near Kabwe, where a swimmer executes a backstroke tumble turn. Water droplets freeze in the air against the bright, humid backdrop of the wet season. The athlete's body curves tightly in a compact arc, toes pointing skyward before the push-off. Hard-edged shadows cut sharply across the green turf beside the makeshift lane. Dust hangs suspended in the heavy air, settling slowly on the wet skin and the surrounding grass. The swimmer's arms extend forward, hands gripping the invisible wall of the lane, while the bright glare of noon reflects off the water clinging to their shoulders.
