Backlit Ironstone Mine Entrance at Dusk in across an active works site in United States

Backlit Ironstone Mine Entrance at Dusk

by Beckett Rangel

Gray ironstone rubble piles against the dark mouth of a mine entrance, rock surfaces slick with recent rain. Low-angle light from the setting sun creates a stark silhouette of the crumbling masonry and protruding rails that jut out from the debris. A fine drizzle hangs in the air, catching the last rays of daylight and turning the metal rails into thin, glowing lines. The ground is churned mud, reflecting the gray sky. Heavy steel tracks lie embedded in the wet earth, leading toward the dark void. Droplets bead on the rough stone edges, showing the cold, mechanical severity of the site. One rail end glows faintly against the twilight.
