Beam Glinting on Wet Mine Rails in Beirut Ruins

by Preston Barnes

Sunlight fractures through the canopy of early summer leaves, casting dappled patterns across a low angle view of rusted railway tracks. Water droplets rest on the metal rails, reflecting the bright afternoon sky in sharp, fragmented points of light. Surrounding the tracks, the crumbling stone arches of collapsed cloisters rise from the damp earth, their weathered surfaces showing layers of age and decay. The ground is a mix of wet gravel and scattered debris, glistening under the brief sun shower. Moss rests on the base of the stone columns, against the cold, hard steel of the abandoned rails that stretch into the shadowed depths of the ruin. at the edge is a single droplet sliding down a rusted rail head, breaking the stillness of the stone.
