Soft overcast light washes the wind-cut ridge near Kathmandu, turning the early autumn rice terraces into a patchwork of muted greens and drying golds. Low-hanging clouds drift across the valleys, obscuring the lower slopes while leaving the upper ridges exposed to the gray sky. Human figures appear as tiny specks moving along the narrow irrigation channels, their small scale showing the vastness of the stepped fields. Thin prayer flags flutter above the ridge line, their colors faint against the pale morning mist. Water reflects the dull sky in the flooded paddies, creating smooth, glassy surfaces that break only where the terraced walls rise in rough earth. The texture of the soil is dark and damp, against the lighter, dried stalks waiting for harvest along the edges.
