Autumn Red Sphagnum Bog Rain Chilpancingo

by Felix Rutledge

Vibrant red and gold sphagnum moss blankets the ground in a dense, waterlogged layer stretching toward a distant treeline near Chilpancingo de los Bravo. Steady rain falls through soft, overcast light, turning the peat into a glistening, textured surface. Pools of water reflect the gray sky between clumps of vibrant vegetation. The dry season air hangs heavy with moisture, visible in the way raindrops bead on the moss tips. Layers of green and rust-colored plants recede into the background, showing endless wet earth. A fallen branch rests horizontally across a depression, its bark darkened by the constant dampness. Water slides down a blade of grass at the edge, merging with the bog below.
