Assembling Puzzle in Kyoto
by Aubrey Sims
Under the cool blue wash of a convenience store sign in Kyoto’s Gion district, a narrow alleyway reveals a lived-in moment behind a shoji screen. A young apprentice in a dark blue happi coat sits cross-legged on a tatami mat, carefully assembling a jigsaw puzzle tin spread across his lap. The cardboard lid, featuring faded illustrations of traditional kimonos, rests beside a steaming cup of green tea. Outside, the wet pavement reflects the neon glow of passing lanterns, while a tabby cat watches from the wooden engawa, its eyes reflecting the ambient city light. A quiet, candid pause in the evening, blending the intimacy of indoor craft with the vibrant, rain-slicked energy of the historic street.
