Arctic Icebreaker Convoy Under Midnight Moonlight
by Simon Little
Heavy overcast skies press low against a steel-gray horizon where a line of icebreakers cuts through thick, fractured sea ice. Cold moonlight reflects off the wet, dark hulls, creating sharp highlights against the matte black water. The vessels move in a tight formation, their bow waves churning slush and broken ice chunks that pile up against the sides. Snow dusts the decks and railings, accumulating in drifts along the superstructure. Thick fog rolls low across the surface, softening the distant peaks of ice ridges while the closest ship looms large with riveted steel plates and heavy rigging. The path ahead shows a clear channel of open water carved by the lead vessel, guiding the fleet through the frozen expanse. One red navigation light glows on the bridge wing, casting a faint red sheen on the snow near the railing.
