Antarctic Oil Station in Kerala Seagrass

by Colette Gomez

Rusted metal vats sit submerged in the shallow, turquoise waters of a Kerala seagrass meadow, their surfaces rippled by slow-moving currents. Shafts of midday sunlight pierce the exceptionally clear water, illuminating the thick, amber-colored whale oil inside the tanks. The industrial steel contrasts with the swaying green blades of the seagrass that drift around the base of the structure. In the dry season, the water clarity reveals the sandy bottom and the shadows cast by the floating equipment. Bubbles rise gently from the edges of the tanks, catching the light as they ascend toward the surface. The scene presents a stark juxtaposition of polar industry within a tropical coastal biome, with the blue water distorting the rigid lines of the machinery.
