Alpine Wildflowers on Bolivian Cliff Edge

by Gail Oliver

Pale yellow and violet wildflowers cling to a jagged rock ledge where the air carries the sharp tang of salt spray. The plants stand low against the wind, their stems bent in a permanent arc of resistance. Gray clouds diffuse the early afternoon light, casting soft, even shadows across the rough, weathered stone. Bare earth surrounds the small clusters, devoid of snow but heavy with the starkness of winter. The flowers sway slightly, their delicate petals against the unyielding granite beneath them. A thin layer of white salt crystals coats the rock surface near the roots, marking the boundary between the resilient bloom and the harsh, wind-swept cliff face.
