Crimson Amaryllis Blooming on Madagascan Cliff in along a salt-sprayed cliff edge near Toamasina

Crimson Amaryllis Blooming on Madagascan Cliff

by Brandy Mitchell

Dappled sunlight falls through broad green leaves to illuminate a single amaryllis bulb rising from the rocky soil. Three tall stems support vivid crimson trumpets that stand out against the pale, weathered stone of the cliff edge. The flowers show fine textural ridges along their petals, catching the bright midday light. Fine salt spray coats the surrounding rocks in a crystalline white sheen, evidence of the nearby ocean. The cool season air keeps the leaves a deep, matte green rather than lush and glossy. Behind the bloom, the perfectly clear sky appears as a sharp band of blue above the horizon. A small patch of dried moss rests on the shadowed crevice beneath the bulb.
