Adjusting Nets in Halifax

by Daisy Kennedy

A Halifax fisherman’s deckhand stands on the wet, grey concrete of a dockside prep area, the harsh winter noon light reflecting off the slushy puddles at his boots. He wears a bright yellow waterproof bib that contrasts sharply with the dull, slate-grey sky and the rusted steel of the surrounding boat hulls. In his gloved hands, he holds a pair of heavy metal tongs, using them to adjust a tangled pile of blue nylon fishing nets stacked haphazardly against a chipped white bulkhead. Behind him, a red plastic step stool sits precariously near a coiled hose, while a stainless steel sink rim, scratched and stained with brine, catches the flat, cold light.
