Adjusting Vise in Halifax

Cool morning light spills across the wet granite pavement of Halifax’s waterfront, illuminating a cluster of pigeons pecking at crumbs near a rusted bollard. The damp air catches the grey tones of the harbor, reflecting off the slick stone where a discarded fishing float, bright orange and chipped, rests against a patch of oily seaweed. Nearby, a local fisherman in a waxed canvas jacket adjusts a heavy iron workbench vise clamped to the side of a weathered lobster pot, the darkened wood grain of the pot’s rim against the cold metal.
