Untangling Rope in Halifax

Mist rests on the granite steps of a Halifax pier as a fisherman in a yellow slicker pauses to untangle a frayed rope fiber from his net, the damp air softening the sharp edges of the harbor. Behind him, the low hull of a lobster boat sits heavy in the gray water, its paint peeling in long, sun-bleached strips. A metal stool rests overturned on the wet dock, catching the faint, diffused light of dawn, while nearby, a stack of wooden crates hints at the morning’s catch.
