Fisherman in Halifax at First Light

by Jonah Barlow

Rain-slicked cobblestones in Halifax’s historic waterfront district reflect the pale, diffused light of early morning, with droplets clinging to the rough granite edges of the Pier 21 terminal. A local fisherman in a heavy yellow slicker leans against a rusted bollard, steam rising faintly from a chipped enamel mug held in his gloved hand, the vapor catching the weak sunlight. Behind him, the red brick facades of warehouse buildings stand damp and dark, their windows reflecting the grey sky. A faded striped awning, partially furled, hangs above a closed bakery, its fabric edges trembling slightly in the breeze.
