Winter Sump Tunnel Reflection at El Paso Lock in at a canal lock chamber near El Paso

Winter Sump Tunnel Reflection at El Paso Lock

by Sharon Nash

Silvery winter light falls through low-hanging clouds to illuminate a concrete service tunnel sump near the canal lock chamber. Dark water in the sump mirror reflects the curved steel pipework overhead and a series of blinking red indicators that punctuate the gray concrete walls. The low angle view emphasizes the monumental scale of the industrial structure, where rough aggregate textures meet the smooth, oily surface of the still water. Frost dusts the edges of the metal grates, while the cold air seems suspended in the heavy shadows beneath the arch. One red LED blinks rhythmically against the wet concrete floor.
