Blast Furnace and Canal Reflections in Cartagena

by Terrence McMillan

Rust-orange steel beams of a massive industrial structure rise vertically from the canal bank, their rough textures against the smooth, dark surface of the brown water below. The early afternoon sun casts broad skylight across the scene, illuminating fine dust particles that hang suspended in the air like golden haze. Reflections of the utilitarian architecture stretch deep into the murky canal, creating a symmetrical doubling of the heavy machinery. Weathered metal plates show signs of heat and age, while the cool season air leaves the water still and glassy. A shadow from a structural beam falls sharply across the wet concrete edge, at the base of the monumental scale of the facility against the quiet market backdrop.
