Aurora Pillars Rising Over Murmansk Night Sky in beneath a moon-washed horizon near Murmansk

Aurora Pillars Rising Over Murmansk Night Sky

by Layla Hodges

Vertical columns of pale green light stretch upward from the northern horizon, piercing the deep indigo of the endless summer night. Thick mist rests on the ground, diffusing the glow and softening the edges where the aurora meets the sky. The landscape below sits in deep shadow, with only faint rim light outlining the silhouette of low tundra shrubs. A sliver of moon washes the horizon in silver, against the cool neon hues above. The low angle emphasizes the height of the light pillars as they disappear into the darkness. At the very bottom, a patch of wet moss reflects the faintest green shimmer from the sky above.
