Windblown Lavender Field at Afghan Sunset in in a bloom-heavy meadow in Afghanistan

Windblown Lavender Field at Afghan Sunset

by Cathy Hunter

Deep purple spikes of lavender dominate a rolling meadow under the final amber glow of late autumn sunset. The wind whips the stems into a uniform, flowing motion, blurring the sharp edges of the flower heads into soft, vertical streaks. Golden light strikes the tops of the plants, creating a halo effect against the darkening sky. The ground beneath is a mix of dry, brown earth and sparse, withered grass, against the vibrant, dense rows of blooms. A few distant, dry scrub bushes stand silhouetted on the horizon line. The entire field stretches toward a low, rugged ridge in the background, showing the vast, open space of the highland meadow. A shadow from a single, tall stalk falls sharply across the adjacent row.
