A weathered wooden gate stands closed against the harsh white glare of the Cape Town noon, its grain deeply etched by years of salt wind. Rust-stained iron hinges and a heavy metal latch secure the planks, showing the texture of age and neglect in the flat overhead light. A small patch of dry, yellowed grass grows at the base of the fence, against the gray concrete of the adjacent wall. One loose nail protrudes from the lower plank, catching a sharp highlight against the matte wood.
