Voters Line at Dawn Outside Xian Town Hall
by Rhett Benton
Overcast dawn light spills across a long queue of voters waiting outside a modern civic building near Xian. The heavy grey sky diffuses the morning glow, casting soft, even illumination on the crowd. Fluorescent fixtures inside the town hall meeting room cast a cool, artificial blue-white hue through the glass doors, against the muted autumn tones of the street. People stand shoulder to shoulder along the concrete pavement, their breath faintly visible in the crisp air. Peak autumn leaves in shades of russet and gold cling to trees lining the walkway, catching the sidelight that skims across their textured surfaces. The line stretches far into the distance, showing the collective public urgency of the moment. One shadow from a streetlamp falls sharply across the wet ground near the entrance steps.
