Winter Vigil Candlelight Xian Square Dusk

Rain-slicked stone pavers reflect the warm glow of hundreds of small candles held by a dense crowd gathered in the center of an ancient Xian town square. The sky above holds a bruised purple hue as daylight fades into the heavy gray of a late autumn evening. People stand shoulder to shoulder under umbrellas of dark fabric, their faces illuminated by flickering flames that dance against the damp air. Traditional brick walls and curved eaves of nearby buildings frame the gathering, their dark silhouettes against the bright points of light. Water droplets rest on the wicks of the candles, threatening to extinguish them as the crowd stands in quiet, tense anticipation. One candle near the front edge flickers violently in the damp wind, casting a trembling shadow against the wet stone floor.
