Violin Workshop Bodies Clamped on Festival Stage Hermosillo
by Eugene Hood
Flat noon sunlight floods the open-air main stage in Hermosillo, illuminating rows of violin bodies secured in wooden clamps. The instruments, stripped of strings and fittings, rest on workbenches arranged across the wide panoramic space. Late autumn air carries visible dust motes that drift through the harsh, unfiltered light beams. The stage floor shows signs of wear, against the smooth, varnished curves of the unfinished wood. Behind the workshop area, the blurred outlines of festival infrastructure suggest a bustling environment, while the immediate foreground focuses on the craftsmanship of the luthier's station. Shadows fall sharply beneath the clamps, showing the geometric rigidity of the tools against the organic shapes of the violins. A stray piece of sawdust rests on the edge of a clamp, catching the glare.
