Cold moonlight washes the wet pavement in shades of slate and silver outside a corner cafe in Glasgow. A solitary knife sharpener stands on the sidewalk, his posture rigid against the damp air. Instead of falling, rain arcs upward in crisp, bright silver streaks, defying gravity as it lifts from the slick stones. The drizzle creates a shimmering veil that separates the sharpener from the dark, brick facade behind him. Reflections of the upward water streak across the ground, multiplying the light into fractured lines. The sharpener's tool rests against his boot, gleaming with moisture.
