Umbrella Crosswalk Sleet Noon Shadows Wrong Way

by Mike Sexton

Steel-gray sleet needles hang suspended in the flat noon light above a crowded crosswalk. Dozens of dark umbrellas cluster together, their surfaces slick with moisture and reflecting the harsh, diffused glare of approaching headlights. A bus shelter to the left steams heavily, its glass fogged thick against the cold. Dramatic, heavy clouds press low against the sky. The most striking detail is the shadows cast by the umbrellas and pedestrians; they stretch upward and backward, pointing directly toward the bright light source rather than away from it. These inverted shadows cut across the wet asphalt in sharp, impossible lines. The steam from the shelter curls upward, meeting the downward-sloping shadows in a visual contradiction. One red taillight reflection smears across a puddle at the bottom edge.
