Neon Reflections on Wet Nagoya Crosswalk in beside a steamed-up bus shelter in Nagoya

Neon Reflections on Wet Nagoya Crosswalk

by Joan Fitzgerald

Indigo twilight washes over the wet pavement of a Nagoya crosswalk, turning the asphalt into a dark mirror. Bright neon signs from a row of shopfronts spill their red and blue light onto the slick surface, stretching into distorted vertical streaks. Steam rises steadily from metal grates along the curb, curling into the cooling air beside a glass bus shelter fogged with condensation. The dry season keeps the air clear of heavy rain, leaving only the residual moisture from a recent shower. Concrete curbs frame the scene, while the glowing shop windows stand in sharp contrast to the deepening blue of the evening sky. One puddle near the shelter edge catches a sharp reflection of a yellow taxi sign.
