Traditional Puppet Show Behind Screen at Delhi Sunset
by Cody Ayers
Dim light from a low-hanging sunset falls through translucent white fabric stretched across a stage in Delhi. Behind the screen, shadowy figures of wooden puppets move in mid-air, their silhouettes sharp against the fading amber glow. The fabric ripples slightly, catching the last rays of the day before nightfall. Overhead, low clouds drift slowly, casting a soft, diffuse gray tone that mutes the background. Strings and rods extend upward, disappearing into the darkness above the stage. The wooden joints of the puppets are visible as dark shapes, their painted details faint but distinct. At the bottom edge, the rough texture of the stage floor meets the hanging fabric, at the base of the floating figures in a tangible, physical space.
