Indonesian Shadow Puppet Rehearsal at Night

Strings of warm bulbs hang low above a dim rehearsal room in Sur, casting a soft amber glow through wet season haze. A performer stands silhouetted against the light, manipulating intricate leather puppets that stretch tall shadows across the floor. The air is thick with suspended moisture, catching the beam to create a visible curtain of dust and steam. Rough wooden poles and hanging textiles frame the edges of the space. The dark shapes of the puppets move with precision, their detailed carvings hinted at by the backlight. One shadow of a puppet's head rests against a cracked concrete wall, sharp and defined.
