Silhouetted Puppets in Copenhagen Rehearsal Room
by Colin Rhodes
Honeyed evening light falls through heavy overcast windows, casting the puppeteers and their traditional figures into sharp black silhouettes against a translucent screen. The wooden stage frame stands in the center of a modest rehearsal room, its edges defined by the backlight. Long shadows stretch across the concrete floor, where scattered tools and fabric scraps rest in the dimness. The puppets hang suspended, their jointed limbs rigid against the glowing fabric. Behind the screen, hands move with practiced precision, manipulating strings and rods that vanish into the darkness of the room. A faint dusting of chalk dust floats in the light beams near the stage floor, settling slowly on the rough surface. The contrast between the dark figures and the pale, glowing screen creates a stark, theatrical boundary.
